Understanding Matcha Grades: From Everyday to Ceremonial

In the world of matcha, the word “grade” is often misunderstood. Many brands label their matcha with impressive-sounding names, but the truth lies in the leaf source, grinding process, and intended use.

Ceremonial Grade is the highest expression of matcha. Harvested from shade-grown young tea buds, it’s stone-milled slowly to preserve the chlorophyll and amino acids that give matcha its iconic umami depth. When whisked properly, it creates a frothy, velvety texture — a reflection of its purity.

Premium Grade sits just below ceremonial. It retains a bright color and smooth flavor, but may include slightly older leaves. It’s excellent for lattes or light desserts where a refined taste still matters.

Culinary Grade, on the other hand, is designed for creativity. Its bolder taste holds up well when mixed with milk, flour, or sugar — perfect for matcha muffins, cookies, or energy bites.

True matcha isn’t about “expensive equals better.” It’s about using the right matcha for the right purpose. Understanding these distinctions helps you honor both the tea and your own intention behind drinking it.
